How long should a short clip be?
Each platform publishes its own length rules, and they matter more than any rule of thumb: a Short over a minute with a copyright claim is blocked, and a Reel over 3 minutes is not shown to new audiences. Here are the rules with their sources, and how long we suggest cutting a clip from a long video.
PART OF CLIPAI · SOURCES LINKEDHow long should a TikTok, Reel or YouTube Short be?
Long enough to finish one idea, and inside each platform's limits: YouTube counts vertical videos up to 3 minutes as Shorts, but blocks a Short over a minute that has a copyright claim; Instagram only recommends reels of 3 minutes or less to people who do not follow you; TikTok found 1 in 4 of its top videos ran 21 to 34 seconds. For a clip cut from a long video, start around 20 to 40 seconds.
What each platform says
YouTube Shorts
Square or vertical videos up to 3 minutes, uploaded after October 15, 2024, count as Shorts. A Short over 1 minute with an active copyright claim is blocked worldwide until the claim is resolved.
Up to 60 seconds when the clip carries music or footage you do not own; past a minute, a claim blocks it everywhere. Otherwise as long as the moment holds.
Instagram Reels
Instagram recommends reels to people who do not follow you only when they are 3 minutes or less.
Stay under 3 minutes for reach outside your followers; most single-idea clips need well under that.
TikTok
TikTok's own analysis (December 2021) found 1 in 4 top-performing videos ran 21 to 34 seconds.
Start around 20 to 35 seconds for one idea; go longer only when the story needs the time.
In ClipAI you can leave clip length on Auto or aim for 15, 30, 45, 60 seconds when you start a video.
How it works
- 01
Find the platform's limit
The table below lists what each platform publishes, with a link to the page it says so on.
- 02
Cut to one idea
Start on the claim or the question, end when the answer lands. Cut the windup before it.
- 03
Check the opening
Length matters less than the first line. A short clip with a weak opening still loses people.
Cutting a clip from a long video
Start on the line, not the setup
Begin on the sentence that makes the point. Context that only matters to someone who watched the full episode can go.
End on the payoff
Stop right after the answer, the punchline or the number. Trailing chatter is where people swipe.
Let the moment set the length
A story can earn 60 seconds; a single tip rarely needs 30. Cut each clip to its moment, not to a fixed number.
Questions
What is the maximum length of a YouTube Short?
Three minutes, for square or vertical videos uploaded after October 15, 2024. Videos uploaded before that date stay long-form videos, per YouTube Help.
How long can an Instagram Reel be?
Instagram's creator FAQ says it recommends reels to people who do not follow you only when they are 3 minutes or less, so 3 minutes is the practical limit for reach.
Is there a best length for TikTok?
There is no fixed best length. TikTok's own 2021 analysis found 1 in 4 top-performing videos ran 21 to 34 seconds, which is a fair starting point, not a rule.
Why keep a Short under a minute?
YouTube blocks a Short over one minute worldwide while it has an active copyright claim of any type. Under a minute, a claim does not block it that way.
Does the same clip work on all three?
Usually. A vertical clip under a minute fits all three platforms' rules, so one cut can go to TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
Can ClipAI cut clips to a set length?
Yes. When you start a video you can leave the length on Auto or aim for 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds, and ClipAI looks for moments that fit.
